Strong Foundations for a Healthier, Wealthier, Smarter Future: CAHO Responds to Canada’s Fundamental Science Review

Toronto, April 10, 2017 – The Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario (CAHO) stands with its national partner, HealthCareCAN, in commending the Federal Government on the release of Canada’s Fundamental Science Review, led by Dr. David Naylor.  While the report focuses on all areas of fundamental science, its implications for health research will support Ontario’s research hospitals in driving a healthier, wealthier, smarter future for Ontario and Canada.

“The funding recommendations and priority areas identified in the Science Review support a sustainable health research enterprise,” said Karen Michell, Executive Director of CAHO. “This will enable a strong foundation for our members to continue their important work of discovering the cures and treatments of tomorrow, fueling our economic engine, attracting and retaining young researchers, and providing evidence for government decision-makers.”

In particular, CAHO is pleased to see recommendations in the following areas:

  • Call for renewed investment in research funding
  • Need to increase focus on investigator-led research
  • Strong caution on matching requirements for research funding
  • Need to have sustainable funding for facilities and administration costs

Ontario’s 23 research hospitals form the R&D arm of Ontario’s health care system. Our members attract $1.4 billion, annually, in health research investments, with a 3:1 return-on-investment for the economy. Our hospitals are also home to 17,500 researchers and research staff from Canada and around the world and support 42,000 direct and indirect jobs across the province.

With the commission of this review, CAHO is pleased to see that the government is committed to science and research excellence in the country, and we stand ready to partner with the government on the implementation of the review’s recommendations.
