CAHO Welcomes Health Care Focus in Budget 2017

TORONTO, April 27, 2017 – The Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario (CAHO) welcomes the new investments in health care in the 2017 Ontario Budget. In addition, the government’s renewed commitment to the Health System Research Fund will strengthen the invaluable research underway in Ontario’s Research Hospitals and support evidence-based policy to tackle system challenges.

“The commitment to investments in Ontario’s health care system, and specifically in hospitals, is welcomed by CAHO and its members”, said Executive Director of CAHO, Karen Michell. “Financially stable hospitals create thriving health research environments, which build and sustain Ontario’s innovation-driven economy.”

The Budget also underscores the government’s broad focus on Ontario’s evolving knowledge and innovation economy, and CAHO and its members look forward to partnering with government in pursuing this important transformation. Ontario’s 23 research hospitals form the R&D arm of our province’s health care system. With a 3:1 return on investment for the economy, hospital-based research creates jobs, trains the next generation of top talent, improves health outcomes, and improves the efficiency of the health care system.

“We look forward to continuing to work with government to improve health care today, and transform health care for the future”, said Michell. “This Budget’s acknowledgement of the importance of health innovation and health system research will help drive a healthier, wealthier, and smarter Ontario.”
