Driving a Healthier, Wealthier, Smarter Province

Ontario’s Ranking in RE$EARCH Infosource’s Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals 2016 List

TORONTO, November 10, 2016 – Across the country, research hospitals are driving a healthier, wealthier, smarter Canada for patients and our economy. The Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario (CAHO) celebrates the achievements of Ontario’s research hospitals on Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals 2016 list, published today by RE$EARCH Infosource. We proudly acknowledge that CAHO-member hospitals comprise half of the 40 hospitals, underscoring the unique and vital role of Ontario’s research hospitals in strengthening our knowledge economy and innovation engine at the provincial and national level.

Ontario’s 24 research hospitals form the R&D arm of Ontario’s health care system. Our members attract $1.4 billion annually in health research investments with a 3:1 return-on-investment for the economy. Our hospitals are also home to 18,000 researchers and research staff from Canada and around the world and support 41,000 direct and indirect jobs across the province.

“So much of what we do in healthcare—from improving patient care to streamlining our health system to commercializing innovations—begins with health research,” said CAHO Executive Director, Karen Michell. “In Ontario, we’ve seen health research lead to groundbreaking new therapies, job creation and spin-off companies, and the growth of regional innovation clusters. These are examples of how research hospitals are making Ontario healthier, wealthier and smarter, and our impact is reflected in this year’s results. CAHO will continue working with partners in Ontario and across Canada to achieve long-term, sustainable investment in health research to carry our momentum forward.”
