CAHO Statement on the 2016 Ontario Budget

TORONTO, February 25, 2016 – The Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario (CAHO) welcomes the commitments in the 2016 Ontario Budget for an investment in Ontario’s hospitals, and its overall focus on fostering innovation and building prosperity.

“Health research makes Ontario healthier, wealthier and smarter. We welcome the announcement of increased funding for Ontario hospitals. We believe the underpinning of a prosperous health research enterprise is to ensure that hospitals themselves are financially healthy in order to deliver fully on their mandate,” said Karen Michell, Executive Director of CAHO.

The focus on innovation and building a stronger knowledge-based economy was also welcomed by CAHO. Ontario’s 24 research hospitals form the R&D arm of our province’s health care system, and our members invest $1.4 billion annually in health research in Ontario. Our hospitals are also home to 18,000 researchers and research staff from Canada and around the world. This investment generates a total of $3.4 billion in economic output and supports 41,000 direct and indirect jobs across the province.

“We look forward to continuing our work – with hospitals and with government – to improve today’s health care, and transform health care for the future,” said Michell.  “CAHO members are committed to using our health research enterprise to actively contribute to building and sustaining Ontario’s innovation-driven economy.”
