CAHO Encouraged by Appointment of Canada’s Chief Science Advisor

Toronto, September 26, 2017 – The Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario (CAHO) is encouraged by today’s appointment of Dr. Mona Nemer as Canada’s Chief Science Advisor, and commends the Federal Government on this important step forward for science and research excellence.

The appointment of a Chief Science Advisor brings designated focus to the priorities faced by the science sector today and Ontario’s research hospitals stand ready to support this work.

“Dr. Nemer has a deep understanding of the needs and challenges faced by Canada’s research sector,” said Kevin Smith, Chair of CAHO and CEO of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. “With support from the Federal Government, we are hopeful that the leadership of the Chief Science Advisor will bring Canada back on track as a global leader in the sciences.”

Canada’s Fundamental Science Review, released earlier this year, provides a strong foundation and strategic vision for Canada’s science sector.  With the appointment of the Chief Science Advisor, CAHO is pleased to see that the government is moving forward on its commitment to support Canadian science.  This appointment, in combination with implementation of the recommendations of the Science Review, will support Ontario’s research hospitals in driving a healthier, wealthier, smarter future for Ontario and Canada. CAHO stands ready to partner with the Chief Science Advisor to ensure a strong future for Canadian science.
