A Message From the Chair

A Message from the Chair

Chair, CAHO, Leslee Thompson

Health research and innovation makes Ontario healthier, wealthier and smarter.  This is the message that CAHO and its members across Ontario are going to share with the public, decision-makers in government and a wide range of stakeholders.  We kick off this discussion this month and it will continue over the course of the fall and winter.

The CAHO community knows that health research and innovation just doesn’t happen.  We’ve made the choice to lead.  As a result, we’ve attracted some of the brightest and best research skills and talent to Ontario.  Private Investment has followed at a rate far above the OECD average.

The CAHO community also knows that the return on investment in health research is real and measurable.  The $1.2 billion invested by our hospitals in research generates three times that amount in economic growth.  This translates to thousands of jobs across all sectors of our economy.

We need to tell the story more broadly.  It’s not enough to ask for renewed and sustained investment in health research.  We need to inspire a common sense of purpose and legitimacy in the value of renewed investment beyond the CAHO community to partners in business, industry, finance and other communities.

On September 23, I will spark this discussion with a speech to the Economic Club of Canada at the MaRS Discovery Centre in Toronto.  I encourage you to get engaged. I would like to hear from you:  How can we create a common sense of purpose with partners across Ontario?  Contribute to the discussion at #ONhealthRI.
